Rider of the Week

Name - Charlie Kranz

Hometown - Tonka Bay, MN

Interests/Activities - My other interests included fishing, boating, running, and eating. Professionally, I am interested in corporate finance and consulting.

How'd you get into cycling? - Got into cycling when I bought an old road bike to get to class and save a few minutes in the mornings. I got hooked as biking was such a great form of exercise and was something fun and new compared to rowing. I've been biking a little over a year now, and look forward to more riding and racing in the future.

Favorite Riding Memory -My favorite riding memory so far is the team's spring break trip to Arkansas in 2011. The hills were brutal but the weather was (mostly) great and I got way stronger on the bike.

Favorite Pro Rider - Fabian Cancellara

It is important to the UMCT to give back to our community.  Research suggests that 1 of 2 men and 1 of 3 women run the risk of developing some form of cancer within their lifetime.  Every one of us is affected in some way by cancer, whether its a friend, family member, teacher, student, close relative, or coworker.  So to raise money and awareness, we've decided to put on a special event February 10th and 11th in the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus Rec Center: a 24 hour long trainer ride.

For 24 continuous hours, between Noon Friday the 10th and Noon Saturday the 11th (central time), we'll be riding our bikes for the American Cancer Society. Depending on the time of the day, anywhere between 4 and 6 UMCT riders will be spinning away the miles on our Kinetic Road Machine trainers with the goal of riding 1500 miles and raising $2500.

We'll be streaming the entire event live online.  Keep us company overnight, make a contribution, spin along with us at home, whatever you please.  We appreciate your helping us make a difference in the fight against cancer.  Dollars raised go directly to the American Cancer Society to help fund groundbreaking cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer information and education, advocate for public policies that benefit the community, and provide services that improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

Whatever you can give will be appreciated, and everything helps. Thank you for your support.
